The English Cheesecake Company – Review

There’s nothing I love more than tucking into a good piece of cake but when it comes to a traditional fruit based wedding cake, I’m afraid to say it’s not really to my taste.  Like many other brides-to-be I wanted a grand looking wedding cake which tasted amazing but was just as pleasing on the eye.

After a quick search on the internet for ‘alternative wedding cakes’ I came across a deliciously tempting website, The English Cheesecake Company.  It wasn’t long before I came across the spectacular wedding cake section.  With so many flavours to choose from I didn’t know where to begin.  Fortunately for us undecided people you can sample your cake before purchasing – completely free of charge if you make a full wedding cake purchase as the sample cake cost is deducted from the final invoice.  With so many cheesecake flavours available you really are spoilt for choice yet destined to find a flavour you and your husband-to-be will adore.

The cake arrives frozen in a neat box packed with dry ice to ensure freshness during the delivery process.  It is important that you defrost the cake overnight in a fridge.  No matter how tempted you may be, wait until it’s completely defrosted before having your first taste – it will be worth it.

I ordered a combination of Sicilian lemon, strawberry, vanilla chocolate profiterole and vanilla chocolate honeycomb cheesecakes (sounds like a lot but they didn’t last long).  The slices are very deep and a little bit goes a long way.  The base is a rich golden colour filled with a soft buttery taste and a lovely crunchy texture.  The vanilla filling is a light creamy colour, completely smooth and so very light.  You expect the filling to be too rich and heavy but it’s not.

The lemon topping was completely refreshing and zingy – a perfect match for a summer afternoon.  The strawberry cheesecake was nice and sweet and finished with mounds of whole fresh strawberries.  I admit that I didn’t particularly enjoy the chocolate honeycomb topping as the chocolate wasn’t to my taste but like a trooper I ate it all!

The winner for me was the vanilla chocolate profiterole cheesecake.  The depth of the cake was like something I had never seen before, it was huge.  Whole profiteroles covered the top of the cake with fudge sauce lovingly poured over it to complete.  Oh the taste! It was smooth, chocolaty, rich and dreamy.

I ordered the four tier (plenty for 120 guests) vanilla chocolate profiterole cheesecake for my wedding and even now it’s still a talking point as ‘the best wedding cake I have ever seen and tasted’.  The delivery side of the process however, was somewhat traumatic for me due to the unexpected inclement weather at the time.

Two days before my wedding day I had a phone call informing me that my cake would not be delivered due to the heavy snowfall in the area and the delivery vehicle unable to access my wedding location.  Of course this information did not digest well and after a few minor tears in the local supermarket car park (I was purchasing some final bits), I was told the only way to get this cake to my wedding was to pay a private courier an additional £150 to deliver.  I felt I had no choice but to pay to ensure that my cake arrived.

I must admit I wasn’t impressed with the customer service and I felt penalised because of the snow (which was just slush by the time the delivery was due) when really the company ought to have covered these costs and as a customer, I shouldn’t have even been made aware of a ‘problem’.  A brides’ budget is very important and at these late stages requesting £150 was quite a substantial blow.

After a frantic 12 hours of stress, worry, panic and contacting the courier numerous times whilst liaising directly with The English Cheesecake Company, my cake finally arrived 6 hours after its scheduled delivery slot and just in time for my wedding day.  Thank goodness my wedding venue, Halstead House Farm, were so accommodating to ensure my cake arrived safely.

Despite the last minute panic, The English Cheesecake Company come highly recommended and their cakes are simply to-die-for.  I would (and will) order from them again; in fact I’m going to order a 1st year wedding anniversary cake for my hubby.  After all, a cheesecake is perfect for any occasion!
